Main activities

ISAFoM is a research structure set up to be competitive and integrable in the European research system. Primary strategic objective is the integration of agronomical, ecological and technological knowledge and the development of methods for the sustainable management of Mediterranean territory. These concepts are at the basis of the ommunitarian research programmes and of the strategy of major research centres in Europe. Among Mediterranean European countries only France has research entities with size and scientific interests comparable to ISAFoM. Helsinki Conference resolutions (1993) on climate change, on biodiversity conservation, on sustainable forest management and on desertification are an essential reference point for the activities of the Institute.

ISAFoM aims to contribute to sustainable development of agricultural and forest systems following two strategic lines:

a) integration of researches carried out in the different sections on specific aspects of ecological and biological balance and their application for optimal conservation of forest and agricultural resources distributed in the Mediterranean basin;

b) intensification of researches on valorisation of agro-alimentary and forest products, with particular attention to their quality.
