EUFAR Airborne Science Webinar #3
Airborne remote sensing in support of atmospheric satellite missions
Frederik Tack (Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy BIRA-IASB)
Wednesday 15 June 2022 (1300UTC / 1500CEST)
Abstract:
Airborne imaging systems have demonstrated good capabilities 1) to map the horizontal distribution of pollutants like NO2 at high spatial resolution (~100 m2) and with high accuracy, and 2) to identify fine-scale emission sources in urban/industrial areas. In this talk, an overview will be provided of recent and ongoing airborne campaigns, coordinated at BIRA in close collaboration with ESA, in support of satellite validation (e.g. S-5P) and mission development (e.g. Nitrosat). Campaign objectives, instrumentation, applied flight strategies and results will be discussed. The main focus will be on retrieval and mapping of tropospheric NO2 and NH3.
