Institution description •The Faculty of Earth Sciences offers programmes in geology and geophysics. •Geology is a strong academic subject at the University of Iceland, and the faculty enjoys collaboration and shared facilities with the specialists at the Institute of Earth Sciences. •Earth sciences are a broad field, from glacial geology to volcanology, earthquakes to geothermal energy, palaeontology to oceanography, that is disciplines that deal with the earth itself, its formation and evolution. •Earth scientists seek understanding of the processes at work in shaping the Earth, and research their speed. They look to connect that which has happened in the Earth’s past with processes currently occurring, to try and understand possible future changes, such as global warming. In addition, the knowledge that is gathered is utilised to find and use the earth’s riches (metals, building materials, fuels, geothermal power, drinking water, etc.) or to prepare human construction. •In recent years, earth scientists have also contributed to the preservation of nature and have aimed to make the Earth more interesting to view for both nature enthusiasts and other tourists.
