Institution description | The National Observatory of Athens (NOA), the oldest research center in Greece, was founded in 1842 and started operating in 1846 the Institute of Meteorology, when the first meteorological observations began. NOA is today supervised by the General Secretariat for Research & Technology. It hosts the UNESCO Chair for Natural Disasters, it is the Greek Focal Point on the Global Earth Observing System of Systems (GEOSS) and operates the National Seismological Network. The Institute for Environmental Research and Sustainable Development (IERSD/NOA) was the first organisation that started a systematic study of the urban pollution in Athens in 1980. IERSD/NOA consists of 20 researchers and 25 scientific technical, technical and support staff. |
