Institution description | The UCL is one of the largest Universities in Belgium with more than 20,000 students and 600 academics. The research of the Geography Department focuses on land use change: its drivers and its impacts on the environment. The department consists of 6 academics, 3 technicians and around 30 PhD students. The physical geography research group of the UCL focuses on spatial modeling of soil properties at the landscape to regional scale. As changing agricultural practices can lead to degradation of soil and water resources resulting in spatial patterns of soil properties. One of the main activities concerns monitoring changes in soil organic carbon (SOC) content to quantify soil-atmosphere CO2 fluxes. Erosion and sedimentation of soil and associated organic matter within the landscape are quantified as sources or sinks of CO2. To control for the spatial variability in SOC within landscapes, we estimate change in SOC over time using fractionation techniques, imaging spectroscopy techniques for rapid assessment of SOC contents, and new integrative modelling approaches. |
