Institution description | Research in the department of Land and Forest Management of teh University of Antwerp concentrates on biomonitoring of the spatial distribution of urban habit quality by plant characteristics, and modelling of the interaction between vegetation and atmosphere in light of the influence of air pollution on plants, and vice versa, the influence of plants on air pollution. A new, and very promising biomonotoring methodology was developed for herbaceous species. There is a very expressed interest for this methodology from (urban) policy makers and administration, and environmental agencies responsible for air pollution (monitoring). Another research topic dealt with is the experimental and modelling approach of vegetation-atmosphere interactions. Main research topics are measuring and monitoring of CO2 and water vapour exchange between forests and atmosphere. Other research concentrates on the ecophysiology of (fruit) trees, especially in relation to drought and salinity stress. Teached courses are e.g. Forestry, Hydrology and Climatology, Land Information Systems and Remote Sensing. |
