Instrument: Lasair® III 110 Airborne Particle Counter

Name Lasair® III 110 Airborne Particle Counter
Acronym Lasair® III 110 Airborne Particle Counter
Manufacturer Particle Measuring Systems Inc.
Operated by ATHENA/RIC-AEROPHOTO-SFS
Operated onboard

Instrument type

Name Aerosol Spectrometer Probe
Acronym Aerosol Spectrometer

Principle of operation

Measured parameter Aerosol concentration and size distribution spectra
Operating principle

Passive Cavity:
Measures amount of light scattered as aerosol particles cross a laser beam. Particle size determined using Mie theory. The particles are focussed in the field of view by a sheath airstream. Collecting optics arranged such that the probe exhibits a very small lower detection limit. Cannot be used within cloud as measurements contaminated by splashing and/or break-up of cloud droplets.
